The rupture of the supraspinatus tendon in the shoulder can occur in the context of an injury or due to intense sports activities in combination many times with a more general wear and tear of the tendon that already exists. Aging is also a major predisposing factor to supraspinatus rupture.

In fact over 50% of people over the age of 70 have experienced this condition. A significant percentage of rotator cuff tears involve the supraspinatus, although other parts of the rotator cuff may be involved, such as the subscapularis or subspinatus tendon.
